“Hinterlands” is what remains of an untraceable memory; the space between what we know to be true and what we have forgotten. Redacted faces, cropped landscapes and misty figures tell us something we can’t entirely make sense of. Ephemeral hues of blue and tactile, plush wools swaddle us in familiarity. Within this uncertainty, my family’s archive of photos and letters serve as a touchstone, allowing me to explore a vast human experience.
Through digital weaving and traditional craft processes, I am able to meditate through these shared memories and reconcile with the irreconcilable. Familial mythologies are reconstructed piece by piece, often with a single needle or thread. The final pieces become their own archival object, speaking to the legacies of revered elders who can’t be met, but won’t be forgotten.
